How much space does an Air Source Heat Pump need?

An Air Source Heat Pump requires both outdoor and indoor space for installation. But what are the key considerations?

1. Outdoor Unit Space Requirements
  • Dimensions: The outdoor unit of a typical ASHP is around the size of a large suitcase or small washing machine, with dimensions generally around 1 meter high, 1 meter wide, and 0.4 meters deep. However, specific sizes vary by model and capacity, so checking the manufacturer's specifications is essential.

  • Clearance: For optimal airflow and efficiency, the outdoor unit needs clear space around it—at least 30 cm (1 foot) on the sides and back and 1 meter (3 feet) at the front. This clearance allows the fan to pull in and exhaust air effectively, reducing strain on the system and ensuring efficient heat exchange.

  • Location: The outdoor unit should ideally be placed on a stable surface, such as a concrete pad or wall bracket, and away from bedrooms or quiet areas to minimize any perceived noise. Units should be positioned away from foliage, debris, and areas prone to snow accumulation.

2. Indoor Space Requirements
  • Heat Distribution and Controls: Inside the home, the ASHP may connect to a central heating distribution system (such as radiators or underfloor heating), which doesn’t require additional space beyond the existing system.

  • Hot Water Cylinder: If the ASHP provides domestic hot water, a hot water cylinder is necessary, typically requiring space similar to a standard hot water tank. This can be installed in a utility room, airing cupboard, or other areas with adequate ventilation.

  • Buffer Tank (Optional): Some systems include a small buffer tank (usually 50-200 litres) to improve efficiency and reduce system cycling. If needed, this would occupy an additional area similar to a small cabinet.

3. Space for Maintenance Access
  • Both indoor and outdoor units require some clearance for maintenance. Outdoor units should have enough space around them for cleaning and servicing, while the indoor equipment should be accessible to check valves, gauges, and electrical connections.

In Summary

In a domestic setting, an ASHP installation is relatively compact but does require a carefully selected outdoor area with adequate airflow and access. Proper placement and space management help ensure that the system operates efficiently, quietly, and with minimal disruption to the living space.
